The installation Ocean Without a Shore is presented as one of the collateral events at the 52nd Venice Biennale on the three altars of the church of San Gallo, a deconsecrated 18th century building close to St. Mark’s. To produce this new audio and video installation, Viola resorts to a new technical expedient that allows him to film the identical subject simultaneously with two television cameras. The theme of the installation “concerns the presence of the dead in our life” (Ibn al-‘Arabi, 1165–1240).
