He completes Living Witness (The Shortest Distance Between Two Points), a work recorded in the Mojave Desert near Lone Pine in California. The work was commissioned by E.ON AG for its new headquarters in Düsseldorf. Gerard Mortier, director of the Ruhrtriennale festival, invites Viola to install a larger version of Five Angels for the Millennium at the gasworks in Oberhausen, Germany, which stands 117 metres tall and measures 68 metres in diameter.
