He is “resident artist” at the Sony Corporation’s research laboratory at Atsugi. Working in conjunction with Sony technician Yasuo Shinohara, he continues to perfect the production of works with time structures subject to accurate monitoring and with electronic processing techniques (Ancient of Days). He wins first prize for Chott El-Djerid at the International Video Art Festival, Portopia ’81 in Kobe. He visits the farming region of Honshu in Japan, recording images for a Sony project using a state-of-the-art video camera (Hatsu-Yume [First Dream]) and completing the work in the Sony lab at Atsugi. Bill and Kira Viola move to Long Beach in Southern California. His studio is at 300 Granada Avenue.
