On the occasion of Bill Viola. Electronic Renaissance the Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi is taking the show out of the palazzo and into other venues in Florence through the creation of specific cultural joint ventures designed to enhance visitors’ experience of destinations and cultural assets.
One of this venues is the Museo della Collegiata in Empoli, founded in 1859, is one of the oldest ecclesiastical museums in Italy. Situated in the ancient Palazzo della Propositura adjacent to the Collegiata di Sant’Andrea, it houses masterpieces of art ranging in date from the 13th to the 17th centuries.
As of 6 April the work Sharon (2013) by Bill Viola will be on display in the museum, which usually hosts Masolino’s Christ the Man of Sorrows currently on loan to Palazzo Strozzi. The artist had not seen the detached fresco, but he was struck by a picture of it that he saw in an art history book and so he wanted to reproduce it in a moving image, adding water, an element that is one of the most characteristic features of Viola’s art.

From 27 July to 17 December 2017, Emergence (2002) by Viola will be on display in the main hall of the Palazzo Pretorio, one of the most representatives buildings in Empoli and formerly the home of the town council.
