Le Murate Progetti Arte Contemporanea
Opening 22nd June 2019, at 17.00
Opening hours, Tuesday-Sunday 14.30-19.30
Le Murate. Progetti Arte Contemporanea will host a group exhibition, that explores the concept of working together. With participating artists from Accademia di Belle Arti di Firenze, California State University, LABA Libera Accademia di Belle Arti and Fondazione Studio Marangoni. The exhibition, curated by IED Firenze, is the outcome of the educational project Working Together by Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi on the occasion of Verrocchio, Master of Leonardo, and realized thanks to Comune di Firenze, Mus.E and Le Murate. Progetti Arte Contemporanea.
What does it mean to work together? How does one keep the artistic integrity whilst working towards a collective aim? How can unconscious collaboration result in art? The loss of authorship may not only be defined as a loss but also a gain in the collective experience. Where can this balance be found? These criteria build the foundation for the artwork selection: the show will feature individual artists, working on the idea of participatory art, as well as artistic collectives working on subjects related to the concept of community. Bringing together artists from different countries and cultural backgrounds, the exhibition opens up a field of diverse interdisciplinary approaches.
The title GOMITO/ GOMITO is derived from the Italian idiomatic expression gomito a gomito, meaning working side by side or shoulder to shoulder. An expression that can be found in many languages and that reflect upon the difficulties as well as the result of working towards a common aim.
GOMITO/ GOMITO intends to create extended relationships between cultural institutions in Florence, both within education and art. The exhibition also opens a dialogue with its audience and involves them in creating an open and shared field, which invites to reflect on wide array of processes of participatory art.
“Working together is a matter of passion and trust as well as cooperation and compromise. It was an exciting and challenging experience, from which every individual gained a lot,” – the curatorial team.
