Building with light For primary school years 3, 4 and 5

To tie in with the Olafur Eliasson: Nel tuo tempo exhibition Palazzo Strozzi has developed tours and workshops for schools to allow students to experience the exhibition as a space both for personal experimentation and for sharing with the class as a whole.

The tours, which are tailored to cater for different age groups, are structured in conversational form and include practical experiments in the exhibition. Workshop activities after the tour urge the children to reprocess the stimuli received from the exhibits with experiments which can be performed either individually or as a group.

Ahead of the visit

In the first few weeks of the exhibition we will be holding meetings for teachers and offering material for preparing the visit, exploring content regarding the artist and endeavouring to make the activities as inclusive as possible.

We encourage teachers, after booking, to fill out the pre-visit questionnaire with information regarding the type of class so that the activity can be effectively tailored to its specific needs.

Tour of the exhibition

The visit to the exhibition consists of a tour of the rooms hosting the Olafur Eliasson: Nel tuo tempo exhibition on the Piano Nobile, where the children are accompanied to experience the large installations with their eyes, their bodies and movement. The tour focuses on a limited number of exhibits so that the children can observe them in greater depth and share their impressions. The children are guided in experiencing a number of activities directly in the exhibition rooms so as to prompt direct interaction with the exhibits and their environment.

Lights, colours and shadows are the ingredients of a journey designed to encourage awareness of self, of others and of the world around us.

Tour + workshop

The activity consists of a first part in the exhibition, where we observe the work of Olafur Eliasson with our senses, and a second part in the workshop.

The installations are our starting point for a personal revisitation in which each child can choose colours and shapes of transparent materials to breathe life into their own personal, unique and original composition. Each creation joins with those of the other children to create a special stained-glass window which is projected in the Palazzo Strozzi workshop and which, when installed at school, can turn the classroom into a space vibrating with colour.
